How do I become a lighting designer?

I'm considering a career in the field of lighting design, unfortunately there aren 't many online resources that provide much information. So I 'm wondering is there any school that specializes provide degrees in this field. Should I go for a degree in theater with a concentration in lighting? For people working in this field, how hard is it to find a job, and how well it pays. I 'm not looking to become rich immediately, but I want to know I' d be supported by this work.
